CBSE and NCERT Planning to Integrate AI, CT in Playway Manner: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) are planning to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) in a playway manner for primary school children. The Ministry of Education (MoE) is planning to introduce a new curriculum where AI and CT will be an integral component in each subject, rather than as separate subjects. Currently, CBSE has modified the curriculum, which is currently being reviewed by NCERT.
CBSE and NCERT Planning to Integrate AI, CT in Playway Manner: Key Highlights
The key highlights related to AI and CT in Playway Manner are given below.
- MoE plans to implement the curriculum from the 2026-27 academic year.
- AI and CT curriculum will be activity and play based which is a tried and tested model of teaching in other developed countries.
- MoE will introduce AI and CT from class 3. However, it will be introduced in play-based learning rather than studying coding directly.
- MoE will use modules under the National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA), along with video-based learning resources, to help prepare teachers for effective classroom implementation.
- Playway manner serve as unplugged methods to teach the philosophy and logic of CT.
- AI and CT helps students to build computational thinking as a basic universal skill folding simple algorithmic ideas into language, maths and environmental studies.
CBSE and NCERT Planning to Integrate AI, CT in Playway Manner: Challenges
The challeneges CBSE and NCERT will face by implementing AI and CT subjects are given below.
- Thought NISHTHA modules are used by MoE for capacity building, educators feel a single training module will be insufficient.
- The biggest drawback whould be how prepared the teachers will be to adopt AI and CT along with their traditional curriculum.
- Teachers need regular workshops, refresher courses and peer learning to gain classroom confidence.
- Training teachers to obtain technological competence to operate digital tools and use AI-enabled platforms is a major task.
To implement AI and CT in its schools, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has established AI labs in select schools across diverse regions to test the curriculum framework, tools, and teacher readiness. Soon, AI and CT will be inculcated in CBSE schools.
