The districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur, as well as the areas of Puducherry and Karaikal, have declared a school holiday today, October 16, 2024.
According to the meteorological department, the depression over south-west Bengal is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai, during the early morning of October 17, 2024. This will lead to heavy rainfall, wind speeds reaching up to 60 km per hour, and landfall near Puducherry and Nellore. According to the IMD, districts like Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu are under the red alert. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh has already declared a three-day school holiday for schools and colleges.

As the depression of the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the Tamil Nadu Coast, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a high alert in Chennai and other surrounding areas. According to the recent update, the depression currently centered 490 km east-southeast of Chennai, is likely to cross the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore by early morning on October 17, 2024. With the depression causing a cyclone-like situation likely to cause heavy rainfall, Chennai residents are advised to take necessary actions. Since the weather is likely to deteriorate further on October 17, 2024, the school will most likely remain closed tomorrow as well. However, official confirmation is awaited. Apart from the red alert districts, such as Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, districts, such as Vellore, Thiruvannamallai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai are under the orange alert.
