Global crude oil prices rose today. Brent Crude was trading over 0.4 per cent up at 61 US dollars and 61 cents per barrel and WTI Crude was trading almost half a per cent up at 58 US dollars and 24 cents per barrel, when reports last came in.  

In the forex market, the rupee today depreciated by nine paise to close at 89 rupees and 96 paise against the US dollar.

In Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, laid the foundation stone of the Bhoramdev Corridor Development Project at a programme held at Bhoramdev Dham in Kabirdham district yesterday.

In Kerala, the Special Investigation Team, SIT, once again questioned Unnikrishnan Potti, the prime accused in the Sabarimala gold plating case. Unnikrishnan Potti had earlier served as a helper to a former assistant priest at the Sabarimala temple. Meanwhile, the SIT, appointed by the Kerala High Court, is trying to gather details about the gold allegedly misappropriated from the Sabarimala temple, including gold-clad panels.

The Election Commission has issued a directive stating that Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates issued by the West Bengal government after 2010 will not be treated as valid supporting identity documents during hearings on claims and objections to the draft electoral roll in connection with the SIR.

The 11th India International Youth Sailing Championship 2026 will officially take place from 4th to 10th January at the Chennai Port. The Championship was launched in Chennai yesterday.

This is India’s longest-running and most consistent international youth sailing regatta. The championship will feature 117 registered sailors from 13 nations competing across five elite youth classes. All races will be streamed LIVE globally on the official YouTube channels.

Sjoerd Marijne has been appointed as the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. This announcement was made by Hockey India today. The Dutchman had led Indian women to a historic fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which was their second appearance at the quadrennial event in more than 36 years. 

India expressed grief over the tragic fire explosion in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. In a social media post, the Indian Embassy in Switzerland said that India stands in solidarity with the Swiss Government and its people during this difficult time.

At least 40 people were killed and many others injured after an explosion and fire tore through the ‘Le Constellation’ bar at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland’s Valais Canton on New Year’s Eve.

In the US, hundreds of devotees gathered at a Hindu temple in California’s Silicon Valley to observe the second anniversary of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The programme was held a day ahead of the anniversary events in India. Families, elders and children attended from across the Bay Area. The evening focused on prayer, devotional music and community service dedicated to Lord Ram.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has declared a new 60-day state of emergency in nine provinces and three municipalities. This comes due to an increase in criminal violence, which has caused serious internal commotion. The President said the 60-day validity of the decree aims to contain and reduce high-intensity violence, neutralise ongoing or imminent threats, and dismantle criminal structures.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has said the island is determined to defend its sovereignty and boost its defence in the face of China’s increasing expansion. This comes after Beijing fired rockets towards the island as part of military drills.

In Gambia, seven people were found dead, and 96 others were rescued after a boat carrying migrants capsized overnight in northwest Gambia. The country’s defence ministry said that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing and the boat may have been carrying more than 200 people. 

The second edition of the joint military exercise Desert Cyclone between the Indian Army and the UAE Land Forces concluded with a closing ceremony at Al-Hamra Training City in Abu Dhabi on December 30, marking the successful completion of nearly two weeks of intensive bilateral training.

The Government has refuted a post claiming that the Income Tax Department (ITD) tracks individuals’ personal digital activity, online spending, or lifestyle. The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau stated that there is no mechanism created by the Income Tax Department to monitor an individual’s digital or online activity.

Centre has approved 22 new proposals under the third tranche of the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, involving a projected investment of 41 thousand 863 crore rupees. These approvals cover the manufacturing of 11 target-segment products, including mobile manufacturing, telecom, consumer electronics, strategic electronics, automotive, and IT hardware.

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan said that India will become a developed nation well before 2047. He was delivering a convocation address at Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute University in Chennai today. He said that India will soon become third largest economy in the world.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today said that India will exercise the right to defend itself from terrorism and that no one can dictate how India exercises its defence. 

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that there has been no change in domestic LPG prices for household consumers. The clarification came following reports in some sections of the media that the price of commercial LPG cylinders has been increased by 111 rupees

Tata Motors Sells 1.7 Lakh Cars In Q3 FY2026, Sets New Quarterly Sales Record: 

Tata Motors sold 1.7 lakh cars in Q3 FY2026 (October-December 2025), posting solid growth during the quarter. The performance was supported by the tailwinds of reduced GST and the peak time of the festive season. The company’s export operations also recorded a sharp increase, although their contribution was only a small fraction of the total volume.
