The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given a six-month extension in the deadline for the submission of M.Phil and PhD thesis to the research scholars. The last date for submission of the aforementioned thesis was 31 December 2020 but the deadline has now been extended by UGC to 30 June 2021.
In April this year, the University Grants Commission had issued a guideline on the exam and academic calendar for all the universities across the country keeping in mind the roaring COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns in place. UGC at that time gave M.Phil. and PhD scholars an extension of six months, especially for those students who were due to submit their thesis by 30 June 2020.
Since the educational institutions have remained shut for several months, many scholars couldn’t utilize the libraries and get their hands upon the research materials. In light of that, UGC states in its latest circular, “Therefore, the students have not been able to conduct their research/experiments in the university laboratories nor they were able to access library services that are critical for completion of the thesis.”
The notice further adds, “In view of the above and in the larger interest of the research scholars, a further extension of six months for terminal M.Phil/Ph.D students, who were supposed to submit their thesis by 31 December 2020, may be granted by the universities i.e. till 30 June 2021.”
The UGC has also stated that the tenure of the fellowship of M.Phil or PhD will continue to remain five years. It has also given an extension of six months for submitting evidence for publication and presentation in two conferences.
