The State Punjab government has decided that the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will conduct annual exams for Class 5 and 8 from the academic year 2019-2020
This decision has come closely after the government proposed the removal of the no-detention policy for Class 5 and 8 with respect with the amendment to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE). The latest PSEB memo uploaded on the website states that the board has received direct orders from the state government for implementation of annual board exams for Class 5 and Class 8 students.
Based on this, the PSEB board and the SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training) subject experts have prepared model question papers for the convenience of students and teachers, to make them familiar with the pattern that the board will be following. It further states that around 20 and 10 marks have been kept aside for Comprehensive Continuous Evaluation (CCE) for class 5 and 8, respectively. The board has also uploaded model question papers for English, Hindi, maths, social science, science, and other subjects.
Elaborating further, the PSEB spokesperson Raminderjit Singh stated that the board has already uploaded model question papers on its website. But the board has not yet decided if Class 5 and Class 8 kids would be writing exams in their own schools or external examination centers. Although he reiterated the fact that no new major change whatsoever would happen in the exam paper and format when it would be set by the PSEB instead of SCERT.
In the year 2016, Punjab had introduced a system for Class 5 and 8 students called ‘Learning Outcome Evaluation System’. LOES is a grading system under which students sit for exams but are not detained or held back and are given grades ranging from A to E respectively.
Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) is a state level Curriculum based in Chandigarh, Punjab, India. PSEB was established in 1969 by Legislative Act by the Government of Punjab.
