Schools in Punjab are all set to reopen today. The state government has issued detailed guidelines that are to be followed by educational institutions. Only schools that are outside the containment zone will be reopening following strict guidelines from the government.
Mr. Vijay Inder Singla, the Punjab school education minister, said that “schools in the state for classes V to XII will reopen from January 7 with Covid-19 protocols in place”. The timing for conducting physical classes in schools will be from 10 AM to 3 PM IST. He also said that after the reopening of the schools, attendance wouldn’t be mandatory.
The minister said, “As the schools are already conducting online classes, and parents of some students prefer to attend online classes rather than physically attend school, they may be permitted to do so. Students will be able to attend physical classes only with the written consent of parents”.
The press release mentioned that “If the strength of the students is large in the school and social distancing norms are not maintainable, in that case, school head or management may make a decision whether to hold the classes in two shifts or call the students on alternate days, at their level.”
The School Education Minister also quoted that students and staff members living in the containment zones must not attend the school or any educational institutions. In addition to his statement, he said that pregnant, older, and other employees with underlying medical conditions must not attend working schools and other educational institutions as recommended by the Union Health Ministry.
