The Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University gave the nod to the proposal asking a 5% fee waiver. Ever since Covid-19 hit, educational institutions have been forced to remain shut. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Raj Kumar, has announced this waiver for all courses during this semester. This may lead to a salary cut for the teaching, non-teaching, and administration staff.

The pandemic has badly hit the university. The relaxation from the earlier fee structure of Panjab University comes as a relief for the students. But it will hit the finances of the university extremely. It will cost the university 1.5 to 2 crore on top of the losses it is currently incurring. The worst part is that the state hasn’t yet released its grant for the university. Even the center gave grants for only two months instead of the three it was supposed to.

A 15 to 30 percent reduction in the faculty salary was suggested on 18 August 2020 with the promise that it will be reimbursed when the situation eases. However, it was opposed by the faculty members. A decision to help the economically weaker students by providing them a 5% scholarship was also put forward. Alongside it was the decision to scrap current semester fees for differently-abled students.

Panjab University has tried covering demands raised by students in the last month, as per S K Tomar, Dean Student Welfare, PU. He believes that the decision will be passed in the next syndicate meeting. However, NSUI opposed the waiver asking for a salary cut for the staff, in favor of student welfare.
