Within the span of this week, more than 20 states in the country closed educational institutions, including schools and colleges. The states also postponed state board exams, college semester exams, and other entrance exams. The step was taken because of a sudden and unprecedented spike in the COVID-19 cases in the country. Due to this, several states have imposed weekend lockdowns and curfews. Therefore, conducting exams in such a scenario was not exactly a viable option.
Many states have canceled the class 10 board exam or made it optional for students who want to appear. Even the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released a notification stating the postponement of class 12 exams and the cancellation of class 10 exams. On 16 April 2021, CISCE also made an announcement along the same lines canceling class 12 exams and giving the class 10 students the option to appear in the Board exams at a later date or to not appear at all.
Several states including Odisha, Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have all postponed their respective state board exams. With instances of students testing positive on college campuses like IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, among others, states also closed down the colleges and universities and took out a notice for the hostels to be vacated.
