The Odisha State Government has decided against holding undergraduate and postgraduate level exams for college students currently. The decision has been made keeping in mind the prevailing situation of COVID-19 pandemic and the daily rising cases. The Education Ministry of Odisha issued a letter to the Vice-Chancellors of all universities in the state to confirm this latest development.

The letter reads, “Due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic related dislocation, the academic session has been badly affected. Though online teaching is continuing, most of the students are unable to get the benefits of such online teaching due to various reasons. Therefore, at present, it is not desirable to hold examination based only on online teaching.”

Exams Only After Physical Classes Resume

Furthermore, the state government has also directed the colleges and universities to consider holding exams only after physical classes are resumed and the syllabus is completed. In its letter issued to vice-chancellors of all state public universities and principals of all government and non-government colleges coming under the higher education department, the ministry outlined that currently, no exams are to be conducted for undergraduate and postgraduate students, which would be based only on online teaching only.

Guidelines for Reopening of Colleges in Odisha Expected Soon

The Odisha government also hinted at the graded reopening of colleges in the state at different stages. Going by media reports, the School and Mass Education Ministry is working on developing the necessary guidelines and SOPs for the reopening of colleges and resumption of physical classes. Reports indicate that the government may adopt odd-even formula or conduct classes in several shifts to prevent gatherings. However, the extra shifts may increase the burden on the teachers.
