GATE 2020 Application Date Extended Again


IIT Delhi has further extended the application deadline of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2020.

According to the latest update, candidates can now apply until October 5, 2019 (Saturday) with a late fee of 500 INR. This fee will be additional to the regular exam fee. The different amounts of late fee for GATE 2020 for different candidates is mentioned in detail below.

The fees during extended period for Male (General, OBC and Others) is 2000 INR while for women across all categories it is 1250 INR. On the other hand, SC/ ST/ PwD students pay 1,250 INR as well. International Students barring (Dubai and Singapore US$ 120) will have to pay a fee of US$ 70. 

GATE 2020 Exam Registration Process 

The steps to follow to register for GATE 2020 Exam online are as follows

  • Visit the GATE 2020 Official website to register
  • Enter the personal details such as Name, Email ID, Country and other requested credentials
  • Create the login password and click submit for completing GATE Registration. 
  • Login using e-mail ID and Password sent on your mail ID and select ‘Application form’ link
  • On the redirected page, enter personal details such as name, gender, date of birth etc
  • Upload scanned photograph, signature, degree certificate, category certificate (if applicable). 
  • Save the application form. Pay the fee through net banking/debit card/credit card. 
  • Submit the application form and take the printout of the acknowledgement page.

There is no age limit set by IIT Delhi for GATE 2020. Although, before applying for GATE 2020, candidates who are in the final year of study should obtain a certificate from their college principal for verification. Candidates from foreign countries possessing a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in the related engineering or science stream are also eligible for GATE 2020.

GATE 2020 Syllabus

The syllabus consists of 24 subjects. However, candidates have to write the exam in only one discipline in which they have completed their qualifying exam. Candidates are advised to check the detailed GATE 2020 Syllabus for the related discipline in order to identify and focus on the important topics to be questioned in the examination.

In GATE 2020 General Aptitude section shall remain common irrespective of the discipline. General Aptitude holds 15% weightage. The GA section will have questions from verbal ability and numerical ability. Details regarding these sections are given below:

Verbal Ability: The following topics are tested in this section of English Grammar

  • Sentence Completion
  • Verbal Analogies
  • Word Groups
  • Instructions
  • Critical Reasoning
  • Verbal Deduction

Numerical Ability: This section comprises of questions which test the basic mathematical skills of the candidates. The following subtopics included in this section are as follows

  • Numerical computation
  • Numerical Estimation
  • Numerical Reasoning
  • Data Interpretation

GATE is conducted jointly by the IISc Bangalore and seven IITs including Kanpur, Delhi, Madras, Roorkee, Guwahati, Bombay and Kharagpur on behalf of National Coordination Board (NCB). GATE 2020 exam is mandatory for anyone seeking admission to master’s program and direct doctoral programs in Technology, Engineering, and Architecture. The primary purpose of the GATE exam is to test the candidate’s knowledge of his Under Graduate Engineering and Science Subjects. Aspirants who qualify in this test are eligible to get admission into the M.Tech and M.Sc courses in various institutes across India.

Every year over 10 lakh candidates appear for the engineering entrance exam of which only 15 to 17% candidates qualify. It is a national level engineering entrance test that is conducted for 25 papers and subjects across different cities in the country and six cities outside India namely Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, and Ethiopia respectively.
