Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has assured that though there is an air of uncertainity due to COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, placements have not been impacted so far.
The institute was quoted saying that even during this period of crisis, it was happy to note that placements have not been impacted. None of the offers (domestic and international) were withdrawn. But a few companies have postponed the date of joining. The institute has been consulting various companies to explore the possibility of work from home model, for internships. The institute has been doing everything within its limits to help and support students in this intensely difficult period.
The placement session of 2019-20 which commenced in December last year witnessed 485 out of 561 students from B.Tech and B.Des courses gain placements from the institution. As per the numbers released by the institution 177 out of 353 M.Tech and M.Des students gained placements and 15 M.Sc, MS (Research) and Ph.D. students have gained placements. The highest offer recorded so far was by Microsoft with a package of USD 214,6000 per annum to three students of IIT Guwahati. Also, they saw a significant rise in international job offers compared to the previous years.
Earlier, when rumours arose on job offers being revoked by companies, Union Human Resource Development minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ”Nishank” had intervened and requested the recruiters not to take back any offer made. He had also instructed the IIT directors to hold special placement drives for the students affected by cancelled job offers. The All IITs’ Placement Committee (AIPC) had also appealed to the companies that took part in campus recruitment, to keep up their promises of placement offers made for the academic year 2019-20.
In a statement issued by the Institute, it opined that in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown and its extension, IIT Guwahati would be compliant to the lockdown rules. It had already begun conducting online courses for theory subjects (more than 350) from April 4, 2020. It hoped to complete it by May 15, 2020. The institute has announced that the tentative schedule for examinations will be in July 2020 and that it would welcome the incoming students for the fresh session in August 2020.
