In a hearing which took place today in India’s apex court, it was decided that the CBSE class 10 and 12 compartment examinations will be conducted on the finalized dates. A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari Sanjiv Khanna, heard the case regarding the pleas which were filed seeking the cancelation of examination. However, SC has allowed the petitioners to challenge the CBSE notifications regarding the examination.

The bench directed that the CBSE had justified reasons for examining as it is for the betterment of the student’s future. Amidst the unrest caused to the worsening effect of the novel coronavirus’s worsening effect, CBSE had canceled some of the examinations scheduled for March. Following that, MHRD laid down specific guidelines for assessing students based on their performance in pre-boards and internal evaluations. All this was done, keeping in mind the well being of the students.

    The Debate

According to the latest statistical reports, approximately 2.2 lakh students couldn’t make it to the threshold with a margin of 1-7 marks. As a result of which, they had to appear for the compartment examinations to improve their performance. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its worsening effects, candidates are finding it problematic to keep up with the usual routine. Citing problems like mental health issues, depression, financial loss, and lack of resources owing to the current scenario, candidates filed the complaint challenging the CBSE norms.

    Why was it Turned down?

Supreme Court rejected the pleas filed by the All India Students Association (AISA), saying that CBSE has already listed the reasons behind conducting the examinations. Saying that it is for the students’ better future, CBSE is all set to conduct the compartment examinations for Class 10 and 12 in the first week of September. Petitioners are allowed to challenge the CBSE notification regarding the compartment examination with solid substantiations. CBSE has already started the online registrations for the same. The tentative dates for the exam will be released soon. Students must keep visiting the official website www.cbse.nic.in for timely updates.
