The Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr. Jitendra Singh announced the release of Rs.11 crore for Northeast students hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
At a meeting of senior officers of the Ministry of DoNER and North-Eastern Council (NEC), the progress of various ongoing projects related to Northeast and the construction of Northeast students hostel in JNU was discussed. The tendering process has already been set in motion by the CPWD (Central Public Works Department) and Dr. Jitendra Singh issued instructions towards making the hostel functional, by all means, within two years.
This will be the first-of-its-kind hostel for Northeast students within the campus of JNU. The acquisition of concerned land and the subsequent forest clearance were done before the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The hostel will consist of a total of 224 rooms capable of accommodating 424 students. A total of 24 rooms have been assigned exclusively for the Divyang students. The hostel complex will consist of a four storied building on a land measuring approximately 1.5 acres.
This project within the JNU campus will help a lot of students. As of 2019, there are nearly a thousand students from the eight states of Northeast studying in various courses at JNU. The key focus of the initiative is providing ease of living for the youth and students from the North-Eastern region.
On the other hand, a piece of land measuring about 5 acres at Rohini area is being acquired from the DDA at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore. It will also be utilized for the construction of another hostel which would be devoted exclusively to the Northeast students studying in Delhi University. The meeting also discussed the status of the upcoming North Eastern Cultural and Information Centre that will be set up in Dwarka in Delhi. The cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 50 crores.
